What is ADHD?

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain regulates attention, impulses, and activity levels. It is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions, affecting approximately 5% of children and 2.5% of adults worldwide. ADHD is not caused by poor parenting, too much sugar, or a lack of willpower - it is a genuine neurological difference.

Types of ADHD

There are three presentations of ADHD: Predominantly Inattentive (difficulty focusing, easily distracted, forgetful), Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive (restlessness, impulsivity, difficulty waiting), and Combined (features of both). Many adults, particularly women, have the inattentive type, which is often missed because it doesn't match the stereotype of a hyperactive child.

Living with ADHD

ADHD affects every area of life - work, relationships, self-esteem, and daily routines. But understanding your ADHD is the first step to managing it. With the right support, strategies, and sometimes medication, people with ADHD can thrive. Many people with ADHD also have strengths: creativity, enthusiasm, ability to hyperfocus on topics of interest, and resilience.

Treatment & Management

ADHD management is not one-size-fits-all. Options include medication (stimulant and non-stimulant), coaching and behavioural strategies, environmental modifications, mindfulness and exercise, and support groups. The best approach combines several of these, tailored to the individual. A good assessment is the foundation for effective treatment.
