How ADHD Presents in Adults

Adult ADHD often looks very different from the childhood stereotype. Hyperactivity may manifest as inner restlessness rather than physical overactivity. Inattention appears as difficulty with organisation, forgetfulness, and trouble completing tasks. Many adults develop coping mechanisms that mask their symptoms, leading to late diagnosis - particularly for women, who are diagnosed on average at age 36.

Inattentive Symptoms

The inattentive presentation includes difficulty sustaining attention on tasks, being easily distracted by unrelated thoughts, frequently losing items, forgetfulness in daily activities, difficulty following through on instructions, trouble organising tasks and activities, avoiding tasks requiring sustained mental effort, and appearing not to listen when spoken to directly.

Hyperactive-Impulsive Symptoms

In adults, hyperactivity often presents as restlessness, fidgeting, difficulty relaxing, talking excessively, and feeling driven to always be doing something. Impulsivity may appear as interrupting others, making hasty decisions, difficulty waiting, impatience, and acting without considering consequences. Many adults have the combined type, showing both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive features.

The Diagnostic Process

In the UK, ADHD can be diagnosed through the NHS or privately. The assessment involves a comprehensive clinical interview covering your symptoms, childhood history, education, work, and relationships. Rating scales and questionnaires are used to quantify symptoms. The clinician will also consider other conditions that could explain your symptoms. A thorough assessment typically takes 1-2 hours.

NHS vs Private Diagnosis

NHS ADHD assessments are free but waits vary by area, sometimes months and sometimes years. Private clinical assessments can be faster when done by a qualified clinician. ADHDNeuro does not provide that clinical service. Our screening report cannot be used with a GP.

After Diagnosis

Receiving an ADHD diagnosis can be a turning point. Many adults feel a sense of relief and validation - finally understanding why they have struggled. Post-diagnosis support includes psychoeducation about ADHD, medication consideration with a prescribing clinician, coaching and strategy development, workplace accommodation advice, and connecting with ADHD communities.
